Ten NSPA chartered aircraft will deliver over 1,000 tonnes of pharmaceuticals in Afghanistan

LUXEMBOURG - The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) will deliver over 1,000 tonnes of medical and pharmaceutical supplies in Afghanistan. In total, 10 Boeing 747 chartered aircraft will fly from different locations between November and December 2020, bringing medication in support to the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces (ANDSF).

NSPA purchased the pharmaceuticals through a competitive bidding process and chartered 10 aircraft for optimized shipping to Afghanistan. The first flight landed on 13 November 2020, and the tenth and last is scheduled for the end of the year. The pharmaceuticals were sourced from several locations in Canada, Portugal, Republic of Korea and Türkiye.

The cargo comprises all kind of medication and vaccines that will be distributed among the ANDSF in an operation worth more than eight MEUR. The project is funded by the NATO-run Afghan National Army (ANA) Trust Fund, one of three funding streams used by the International Community to channel its financial support to Afghanistan's security forces and institutions

The assignment is part of the extensive NSPA support to the Combined Security Transition Command in Afghanistan (CSTC-A). As part of the Resolute Support Mission, CSTC-A is the centre-of-gravity organization for the security assistance process for the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces (ANDSF) and ministries. Under CSTC-A projects, NSPA enables the establishment and sustainment of Afghanistan infrastructure, facilities and organisations including military, law enforcement, education and medical.
