Depot level maintenance complete for SAC-01
10 November 2014
The first of the three C-17 Globemaster III aircraft bearing the registration SAC 01, recently rolled out of the Boeing facility in San Antonio. During the second half of year 2014 and early 2015, the Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) fleet of three C-17 aircraft is undergoing extensive maintenance carried out by Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer.
The NAM Programme, an integral part of NSPA, owns the three military transport aircraft on behalf of the 12 SAC participating nations. SAC airlift missions are being executed by the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW), a multi-national military unit comprised of members from the SAC nations.
Together with representatives from the Logistics and Support Squadron (LSS), the NAM Integrated Project Team, collocated with the USAF C-17 organization at Robins AFB in the United States, manages and oversees the execution of the Depot Level Maintenance. “Our first experience with putting an aircraft through the depot was very positive, coming in on time and on budget. We look forward to having all the aircraft go through this major overhaul,” said Mr Brent Deen, NAM Weapon Systems Manager.
The aim of the maintenance programme is to ensure safe and reliable operation of the complex aircraft and its systems for the next maintenance cycle. The extensive four-month work includes removal of many aircraft systems for back shop inspection, maintenance and possible repairs and updates. The C-17 also undergoes a complete paint removal and repainting of its airframe. SAC 01 was handed back on 23 October. On the following day an aircrew of the HAW performed a ferry flight that took SAC 01 from San Antonio back to its home field, Pápa Air Base in Hungary. Its first operational airlift mission began on 27 October and was executed successfully with all of the aircraft systems performing flawlessly.
Currently, SAC 02 is in maintenance which will be finished in March 2015 after which the third and the last aircraft of the program, SAC 03, will follow. The target date for the completion of the first Depot Level Maintenance of the SAC C-17 fleet is June 2015.
