08 November 2012
On 19 October 2012, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the North Atlantic Council and representatives of several ISAF partner nations concluded a three-day visit to Afghanistan. The delegation travelled between locations in SAC 01, a Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) C-17. SAC 01 is one of the three C-17 Globemaster III aircraft which are stationed at Pápa Air Base, owned by the NATO Airlift Management Programme and operated by the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW). HAW is a multinational military unit composed of personnel from SAC participating nations.
The SAC Program is a multinational initiative to fulfil the strategic airlift requirements of its members. By pooling resources and sharing the capital investment based on a pre-agreed allocation of flying hours, this Programme is a prime example of Pooling & Sharing, Smart Defence and Smart Support.
